Texon serves a winner with Texon HeatShield

Heat transfer from a playing surface can create a build up of heat within a shoe, leading to sweaty feet and wet shoes that softens the skin and makes them more prone to blistering. Global sportswear brand Nike, were looking for a solution to this problem after feedback from some of their top athletes. Nike Tennis asked Texon International, leaders in high quality structural material solutions to the global footwear industry, to solve the problem.

Texon’s product innovation and development team worked with Nike Tennis to create a specific solution by modifying formulations and material composition as well as passing Nike’s strict material specifications leading to product adoption. The collaboration resulted in the development of Texon HeatShield™, a Strobel insole material designed to give insulation against heat by using natural air, which has poor thermal conductive properties, to act as a barrier from the heat rising up from the sole.

This technology derives from other products that Texon developed for the Thermal Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) industries, where thermal conductivity is an important requirement. The open weave structure of the insole allows air to be part of the material construction, without compromising the tensile forces of Strobel construction.

The foot has over 250,000 sweat glands and increased moisture through sweating is a common problem for athletes. A typical Texon HeatShield™ insole weighing 8gms will hold 40cm3 of air, which can dramatically improve the environment within the shoe. When independently tested by SATRA, the organisation found it to be 50 per cent better at resisting heat than any material it had tested at the same thickness.

One of the key elements of this process was Texon’s Technical Support Team, within the shoe factories, who ensured production implementation of Texon HeatShield™ ran smoothly.
