Today we celebrate World Oceans Day 2020
On World Oceans Day, people around our blue planet celebrate and honor our ocean, which connects us all. According to the United Nations, the purpose of the Day is to inform the public of the impact of human actions on the ocean, develop a worldwide movement of citizens for the ocean, and mobilize and unite the world’s population on a project for the sustainable management of the world’s oceans.
The theme for this year’s event is ‘Innovation for a Sustainable Ocean’ – As the challenges to the ocean continue to grow, so does the need for novel solutions and the people driving them.
At Texon, our ambition to zero waste and the need to protect our planet is why we put innovation and sustainability at the core of everything we do. So on World Oceans Day, we take a look at how our innovation is making a sustainable difference.
Zero waste by 2025 is an ambition that is driving us to make a sustainable difference and push the boundaries of what is possible when it comes to sustainability. By finding pioneering new solutions that hit the mark with our consumers, will help us drive change right across our industry.
One of our 2025 goals is to reduce our use of virgin materials by 50%, and look to find more ways to use what we already have and take less from the planet. A great example of this is Texon Halo. By utilising recycled plastic bottles, Texon Halo is contributing to keeping our oceans protected. Developed by a team of experts that specialize in the development of eco-friendly, structural solutions for footwear production, Texon Halo is a high-performance, powder moulded, reinforcement material that has excellent sustainability credentials and delivers distinct and measurable performance advantages.
For every 1 million pairs of Texon Halo counters, over 333,000 plastic bottles are diverted from landfill and over 350,000 blister packs are saved from going to waste, contributing to 50% total recycled content, helping to save both our planet and our ocean.
In addition to using plastic that may otherwise go to landfill, Texon Halo is also provided as a NET component, which means there is zero waste. Compared to a sheet material, this means that there is approximately 25% more volume in each container. This maximizes the efficiency of the supply chain, as fewer containers are sent via sea route and in turn reduces the amount of CO2 emissions and the impact on the marine environment.
By working together as a community and as a business that is continually innovating and striving to reach our 2025 zero waste ambition, we can all ensure our shared oceans are protected and restored.
